Over a year ago, DS and I went to Orto Trading Co. to celebrate our 2 year anniversary. We didn’t love the food – in particular the chicken cooked in hay was confusing – do we eat the hay? What about the hay that is stuck to the chicken? And the chicken that is stuck in the hay? Didn’t get it. That was back when it first opened – now it is a Surry Hills Staple (I feel like all those words need a capital as it should be a proper noun for a particular phenomenon) and having heard great things about its breakfast, we decided to give it a shot on one of the cold rainy Sydney mornings.

Breakfast with J is always a great opportunity to try out some of the lesser known cafes around Sydney. With Cowbell 808 and now St Jude, “that” end of Bourke Street in Surry Hills/Redfern really seems to be up-and-coming. St Jude is packed full of families, couples and groups of friends on a Saturday morning, either enjoying the warm sunlight through the open windows or the outdoor seating on the pavement outside.
